What can be taken away from this book? It's full of illustrations and has become the one I pick up when I can't get motivated. The variety of styles and approaches are numerous. No, it's not a book with detailed instructions. It's from the school of originality where you see something that stirs you to interpret in your own way. What can be done with line? How did this artist take the pen, pencil, sharpie, etc. in hand and make it an individual statement?
Touches on many aspects of sketching, giving a succinct overview of each. The sketching samples are an interesting variety of styles, subjects, and materials.The demonstrations included are helpful for exploring techniques. The author doesn't micromanage the demonstrations, which allows the artist to find their own style within the methods.Overall, I am very glad to have this book to round out my sketching skills. It is also an asset for anyone looking to explore Urban Sketching techniques as well. Worth it for novices and intermediate sketchers.
I can't say enough good things about this book. I refer to this book often. It has been most helpful to me for my plein air drawings and vacation journals. Very helpful for sharpening ones skills and recording details. It is a real treasure. Well worth owning.

This book is the answer not only for me but for everybody that tries to find a roadmap for getting from idea to result. I must compliment the book for very nice illustrations that shows how sketching can be. It is inspiring and really helpful for your development as an artist.
The title "sketching" lead me to think it was something else. The preview was also focused on "sketching" (basic line drawings). However this book is about making a completed water color painting, very little about actual "sketching."As an art book it's fine, it's just not "sketching."
