Moti finds lost toys and gives them back to their owners. He decorates placemats to help celebrate Shabbat. The book turns each mitzvah into a puzzle for readers. When Moti tosses 'scraps and crumbs' to hungry animals, the text asks, 'What mitzvah is Moti doing...?' and 'How many birds can you find?' Some readers will be frustrated that this is more of a puzzle book than a story. Others will be pleased by the lack of conflict. In this book, mice and cats get along and give one another gifts--mostly cheese. The loose, sketchy pictures of the characters by Knopp-Kilpert are endearing. Moti is a little mouse who is waving to everyone. Shalom! He is a “busy little mitzvah mouse who lives under the Berman family’s kitchen sink.” There’s a little mouse hole right below the pipes. Of course the kitty, Pepper, is peeking around the corner to see if she can see Moti. While Helen and Simon are tucked into their beds, Moti is doing a mitzvah in their room. Ah, he is feeding the little goldfish so he won’t be hungry. Yum! Then Moti heads into the kitchen to see if there is yet another mitzvah for him to do.It doesn’t take before Moti finds a mitzvah to work on there because he “sees a mess” on the floor. He’s sweeping it up and, of course, Pepper is watching to see if he gets it all cleaned up. Then Moti does a mitzvah “with those scraps and crumbs.” He takes his dustpan outside where some raccoons, birds, and other critters can nibble at them. Moti the mitzvah mouse finds all kinds of things do to around the house from picking up toys, cleaning, to “collecting coins for the tzedakah box.” Gee, Moti is always helping others, but will anyone do a mitzvah for him?This is a charming book about the mitzvah that young children will learn a lot from. Of course a mitzvah, a good deed done in secret, is something little Moti knows all about. In this book the whimsical illustrations show just how he goes about doing those good deeds. Of course it’s no surprise that in the end someone does something special for him. In the back of the book there’s a marvelous two-page spread that shows children performing their special mitzvahs, something young children can learn from. We bought this book as a gift for our son's first Hanukkah. Our theme was "Books and Bath" and this was one of the items that we purchased for the holiday. The story is really sweet and our son enjoyed the illustrations. The story talks about all of the nice mitvahs (good deads) that he does and ways that the reader can do nice things too. It has a wonderful message and we will continue rereading this book as he gets older.
