How could you do this, Dugoni!?! What were you thinking? Letting the cat be killed by a car was bad enough; but this? This was beyond the pale! There's vicious, and then there's going too damned far. I have given your first two books 5 stars. I would have preferred not to rate this book at all, but couldn't review without doing so. Okay, so maybe I'm a reader who gets too emotionally involved with the characters. But if you start reading a series, the characters become more than just names on a page--at least for me. And you, Dugoni, are the author who wrote them in such a way that I got to know and care about them. So other readers may take all in stride and not have the gut reaction I did. If you can be sanguine about characters and just appreciate the plot, good for you--go ahead and read this book. Enjoy. I, on the other hand, was so frustrated and upset I just skipped to the last 10 or so pages because I so hoped for a happy ending. Not to be. I will buy book #4, but if it turns out to be even close to this one, I'll never read another David Sloane book again. Not even a character in a book should have to suffer the pain and loss that Sloane has. I know it's fiction, but I still can't take it.
I liked the end. It had the potential of being sappy...but it wasn't.Listen, I like Dugoni. I've read several of his books, to include the 5 book Tracy Crosswhite series. "Bodily Harm" is not in the same vein, quality wise, as the Crosswhite series. It just isn't. The story line is difficult to follow in places. Some of that difficulty is due to flash backs, which, I will admit is set off by italics, so we know when that is taking place. In another respect, there were times when I just didn't know who was talking. There were scene changes that at times were confusing, given what was going on otherwise at the time.. I also think that some of the dialogue was unnecessary to further the story line.I don't retell story lines in my reviews, but have to say the overall read was "wordy" in places.I thought the plot was relevant and was well developed. The characters were fleshed out, both protagonists and antagonists There was certainly rising action, falling action and a resolution, which as I say above came dangerously close to being "sappy" but Dugoni cleaned it up in the end, which was good.Again, I liked the book, as I do like this writer's style in the way he tells a story. But must confess that Tracy Crosswhite is his bench mark in writing, not this read.
I have read, so far, all of Mr. Dugoni's books. While it's hard to choose which series I like best, I can honestly say that this one is the best. It made me cry, which I never have done while reading a book. It also made me believe that we still have good, unselfish people in the world. In today's world, we need to remember that more than ever. Thank you for the book and the story about your Dad.
The first two David Sloan books were excellent. Bodily Harm was even better. (I read Murder One first and it's the best!) Bodily Harm will break your heart in many ways, in the story about the children who died, the others who died who tried to do the right thing, and David's personal tragedy. It has its uplifting message as well. Sloan's partnership/friendship with Charles Jenkins is particularly touching given David's personality and his tendency to keep people at arms length. These are smart, capable men who go to any length to get at the truth. This is a smooth thriller that is well written and moves along with action and suspense on every page. The character development, particularly of Sloan and Jenkins, is excellent. Bodily Harm is a wonderful novel - you'll love it!!!
Mr. Dugoni takes you on an emotional rollercoaster that lasts long after you read the last word on the last page. David Sloane and Charles Jenkins meet the one adversary who just may be able to take them both down. There is so much to this novel, action, courtroom drama, greed and kindness, evil...but mostly love. It may seem a strange thing to say about a book so packed with action and intrigue, but read this book and then try to tell me I'm wrong.
