Azzarello's 100 Bullets is one of the most highly acclaimed, popular, and unique crime/noir series ever. After hearing so many positive things about this book for years before actually reading it, I finally picked up a copy and I was not let down. The series has a pulpy feel, almost like a Tarantino movie, yet it also has a very complex underlying story that is slowly revealed throughout each installment in between succinct stories of recurring characters and scenes along with characters that might only appear in just one or a few chapters. The art has somewhat of an old school feel and might seem bland at first; however, Risso's artwork has really grown on me and there is genius in the simplicity of the line work. Color is emphasized used more than line work or pen strokes to reflect the darkness of the story and also to portray the characters emotions, moods, and thoughts. In fact, Risso is masterful at using negative space and dark color contrast that can express moods and ideas without any words. The books speaks from many perspectives and delves into a wide variety of urban crime and corruption. Whether its New York street gangs, Chicago mafia, drug cartels, hitmen, and even petty conmen, all types of crimes are illustrated with an almost frightening aspect of realism. I would not reveal to much about the actual story at the heart of the books pulpy feel, but I will say that some aspects of it may seem confusing at first. This gets better as you keep reading the series and more is revealed as the pieces fall together. The writer definitely does not hold your hand and there is some deep information to infer and multiple readings are recommended. Luckily with a book as good and classic as 100 Bullets, a reread should be a pleasure.

2.5 starsThe art reminds me of the Bruce Timm Batman cartoons: simple, angular and limited in the amount of colors (for a noir feel). This series has 100 issues, published between 1999 and 2009. I sat down and read this first trade in the summer and fall of 2018. It took a while to get through, which doesn't speak well for it's ability to hold the reader. At first, this seemed like an anthology series where different characters got offered a way to get revenge without any legal entanglements or blow back. There are no good or noble characters. Some are worse than others. There are pimps, gangsters, drug dealers, rapists, murderers and other foul characters are every turn. A few times, the writer attempts to make them a bit sympathetic, but then they turn out to be also worthy of scorn. It's a dark book. After several issues, it becomes apparent that there is a very slow underlying story that is brewing. The problem that it is so disjointed that it is hard to follow or even really care. For 1999, this was a bit forward thinking, though I don't think I would have even liked it then.Getting through it was way more work than pleasure. I won't be reading any more volumes.

I"m hooked. 100 Bullets is a well written, complex and beautifully drawn (and colored) story. It's everything a good story should be. Mysterious, intriguing, suspenseful, action packed and on and on. Best of all, it has no agenda. No preachy, political correct world view shoved down your throat like so many of today's current comic books. At least none that I can detect. I can't say enough good things about it. I'm on Book number 3 as I write this review and I'm going to be sad when the ride is over. But, I plan on rereading it all once I'm done, I know there is plenty of detail I haven't caught on the initial reading. Azzarello lived up to all the great things I've heard about his writing. Did I mention Rizzo's art is fantastic? Well, it is. Get this book! You won't regret it...if you like crime comics and conspiracies.

Bang! Bang! This comic was good. I wish I got this when I started reading Fables. When you quickly glance at this book, it does not look like much. However, this is a comic you do not want to take a quick glance at in a bookstore. In my option, the writing is top notch quality and the art is a story all on it's own. Dare I say this is my favorite Vertigo comic book after Fables? This comic has a lot of soul in it, mixed with violence and gritty materiel. For those who do not know 100 Bullets is about giving people a second chance at revenge. Will they take the offer or let life choose the fate? 100 Bullets is also Vertigo four longest running comic (after Hellblazer, Swamp Thing, and Fables). However, it is also Vertigo second longest running creator-owned comic after Fables. With 100 issues, this comic is important for the company I think. Once you read it, you will see what I mean. The story within just the first volume is a little bit of a mystery. It is a crime comic, so was not expecting everything to be explained, and rather have the mystery kept from me. The real gem to this comic is the writing though. Azzarello knows how to write developed characters. I first read him with Wonder Woman, but this is far better. As I said, it has more soul to it. When it first starts out you begin to like Dizzy and want to know more about Agent Graves. What is his story and why does he do what he does?Besides Dizzy, I like many of the other characters. Now before I confuse people let me say that these characters are mostly anti-hero. At times you root for them, but then you remember mostly everyone is a criminal. Unlike other comics were your given a good guy and a bad guy, this one has no good guys and not everyone is fully bad. To write a great crime novel, everyone needs flaws. The art is so-so in this book. I mean I like it, but it is something I would not like if I just quickly looked at it, which is why I probably held this book off for so long. Yet when you are reading the book, you realize the art s telling a story while others are talking. Like the scene in Miami, Agent Grave and Lono are talking while two nameless men are fighting each other. To me that is good art in a comic, add little background details like that that help the story. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen does that all the time.Fans of the Fatale comic book might like this book too. Fatale is what got me into the gritty crime comics actually. Brubaker focus on internal dialogue (maybe some of the best for comics), but I noticed 100 Bullets has no internal dialogue or some box telling you were the issue is located. With this comic book, that style fits though. This team want you to get involved in the story. That is one reason I think this would make a great television show, but that is another story.Honestly, if you love Vertigo stuff this is a must. Sure, you got Sandman, Fables, and the fantasy stuff, but this is great if you want more of a realistic setting. Do not get me wrong, I love the fantasy stuff too, but sometimes you need a punch-in-the-balls type of real life story to help you get through your own life. Just be warned this deals with heavy stuff, but you will be begging for more.

I found a piece of this series in a bargain bin at a book store, bought this one to start the series. It is so good, would make a great TV series.
