About the Author
Robert McCloskey (1914-2003) wrote and illustrated some of the most honored and enduring children's books ever published. He grew up in Hamilton, Ohio, and spent time in Boston, New York, and ultimately Maine, where he and his wife raised their two daughters. I have loved this book since a small child. Ruth Sawyer's wry witty writing combined with Robert McCloskey's beautiful illustrations didn't know what a profound effect this wonderful, expressive book would have on my life as an artist. My original book was so worn out from overuse, my parents threw it out much to my dismay. But now that I have this book back again, and in such wonderful condition (thank you to The Stone Soup Foundation, Inc. for selling me this book!). When I opened the package, I cried, that's how much this little book meant to me.
I read this to my kids when they were young, and now I found it again for my grandson. The repetition is great for the preschooler’s ear and the story is a peek into Appalachian Hill people’s culture.
I loved this book as a child (1980s). I was really happy to find it for my son, who is 2. He points to the illustrations and says, "That's Merry! That's Grumble! That's Johnny! OOH, A PIG!!!"
