Review
Seeing is believing, so they say. But I’m betting “they” never saw The Art of Deception: Illusions to Challenge the Eye and the Mind. More than a collection of optical illusions (though it surely is that), The Art of Deception features painting, photography and graphic design that’s made to make you look twice. Or three times. These are works that scream out to you: “Hold on a sec, all is not what it seems.” Take Liu Bolin’s photograph of a small wooded area near Beijing. Looks innocent enough, until you notice the sly presence of a man standing right in front of you. Is he painted to blend in? Is he transparent? Or Ben Heine’s photograph of a drawing that offers a bird’s eye perspective of a nest of what could be skyscrapers. A young man is holding the drawing in such a way that he seems to be floating above them, looking down into them. Or how about Nikita Prokhorov’s tessellation art, in which figures are intertwined in what could be endless patterns? Or Oscar Reutersvard’s impossible figure designs? There’s really almost too much here to marvel at, and your eyes will widen to amazed orbs as you take it all in. From Punya Mishra’s ambigram of the word “good” with the word “evil” embedded inside it, to Guido Daniele’s paintings of animals on hands, The Art of Deception is a brilliant study of how artists from across the globe see and bend the world around them. It’s not so much a game, though it can be, as it is an interpretation of the world as they see it. Their juxtapositions surprise, then illuminate, and finally provide “a-ha!” moments that leave you smiling. This wonderful book features a foreword by John Langdon, king of the ambigram, and bite-sized essays about each work of art. They don’t give the secret of the work away, but each one offers a glimpse into the mind of the artist and a peek at what he or she is trying to accomplish within each piece.—January Magazine

A late, interesting, and pleasing blend of modern art and optical illusions. Many surreal and dadaist artists are here incorporating new variations of old optical favorites, such as the Beatle-esque "three-prong blivet" (a.k.a. the "Mad Magazine Poiuyt" or the old WFF-n-PROOF game logo). Also, variants of the "impossible stairway" and the "Two Un-equal Tabletops" share equal billings with Magritte-esque pictures containing subtle (but not deceptively confusing) illusions built into the fore- or background. A few of the flip-reversal word-drawings of Scott Kim are here as well as many others. One drawing/picture, for example shows the back of a girl's head with the part in her hair lined up and juxtaposed ahead of a footpath, giving a new "bend" to perspective. Entries are generally arranged in clusters by artist, most in full color. One of the better "optical" or "modernist" art collections I've seen, and mostly relatively recent (2010 on).
The ART OF THE DECEPTION is one of the best optical illusions books ever published. What makes me so certain? I am the co -author of Brad's first optical illusions book, THE ART OF THE ILLUSION, which has become a benchmark book of illusory art. The main reason for that success was Brad's tireless efforts over two years. His lifelong devotion to illusions of all kinds coupled with his encyclopedic knowledge of this art and the artists who please us so much places him at the forefront in this field. Simply put, he and his work are the best. Add to this the fact that he is one of the most straightforward, ethical and caring writers I've met over many years and it ensures the highest quality in his output. I would buy anything Brad Honeycutt publishes. This current work matches, if not exceeds, our joint effort. The ART OF THE DECEPTION will be on the store shelves for the next 50 years, probably longer . . . and in most schools worldwide. The presentation is beautiful and impeccably assembled; the joy it will bring you is limitless. His love and devotion to illusory beauty jumps off the pages. Buy 2 and give one as a present. Your friends and family will think you know how to buy the perfect gift. It is a gorgeous production.
I would not consider myself an artist and I know little to nothing about the science behind optical illusions. I do, however, enjoy looking at cool pictures that play tricks on my mind, and I really like to show the more difficult ones to my friends to see if they see what I see (after I've figured it out of course!). In that regard, this is a great book. I opened the book one night just to look at a few pictures and a couple hours later I was turning the last page. It was fascinating to look through. I read through the other reviews and they espouse the artistic value of this book. I don't disagree with all that, but I'm just a practical person who likes to read for fun. This book scratched that itch. There was plenty of variety to hold my interest and the actual quality of the paper and binding, and vibrancy of the printed colors was excellent. This is a great book to have on a coffee table or (don't tell the author I said this....) in the bathroom! It made me smile and it will do the same for you!
I think this is a marvellous collection of - mostly - contemporary illusions. There's quite a lot of them I knew already, but also a lot that I didn't.It's so much better to have them on tangible paper than to have them only on a harddisk in a virtual form. Altough the motion illusions seemto be working better on a lit screen. However, the major bonus, I think, is to have some background info on the artists who created these pieces of art. It's really very informativeand enlightening to read something about their views, inspiration and techniques. Thus far, a lot of illusions on my pc had been fairly anonymous. Not anymore, thanks to Brad Honeycutt's book. So, in short, I'm really pleased to have this book added to my collection of illusion material! A musthave for all lovers of optical magic!P.s.: Also check Vin Konings Google+ for some more crazy stuff!
I have many books on optical illusions and art. I love this one because it doesn't just rehash Escher one more time. This thick volume is well presented with clear, high quality images and is comprised of recent (post 2000-2013) work, most of which is truly outstanding.
Beautifully produced book with many lovely and surprising images.
great table book with wonderful pictures
