Dirk and Al are in fine form in this latest installment in the Dirk Pitt series. The latest undersea technology, great chase scenes, Dirk and Al emitting corny wisecracks as they risk their lives to save damsels in distress – it’s all there. Dirk Jr. and Summer get a few scenes as well.In a project so secret the president has only just learned about it, the U.S. has developed a new generation of high-speed submarines that can tip the balance of naval power back for decades to come against Russian, Chinese and Iranian challenges. But two top researchers on the project are mysteriously killed in an attempt to steal the sub’s technology. And only Pitt sees a link between this and a recent incident half a world away, where Pitt had helped avoid disaster by keeping a deserted freighter on autopilot from crashing into a crowded cruise ship. People in both incidents died a hideous death with weird symptoms. And behind it all is a nasty plot to corner the world’s market on rare earths – rare elements on the Periodic Table that modern technology, defense-related and otherwise but particularly defense-related, increasingly require. There’s a wicked billionaire, and there’s his unimaginably evil secluded tropical lair - all the familiar Cussler trappings, including the babelicious FBI agent Ann Bennett. The now happily-married Pitt, though, turns the series' romantic tables by gently fending off her advances as they race around trying to get to the bottom of the plot. It’s quintessential Pitt, with action in the Pacific, the Panama Canal, the Ohio River; Washington, Madagascar, the Indian Ocean; Australia, Inner Mongolia, Beijing – everywhere from Santiago to San Diego, both actually in there. And Tijuana. There are more shipboard fights, boat pursuits and clever usages of industrial machinery than I can recall. Plus a car chase involving a Packard from Pitt’s antique collection. And it’s all done with panache. You have to admire the hundred-dollar tip Pitt leaves a Panama bartender who not only lets him use a pay phone when he looks like he’s crawled out of a sewer, but comes up with a bolt-cutter to cut an electronic shock collar off Pitt’s neck. And there’s the usual long-ago shipwreck somehow tied in to the action, this one an Italian cargo submarine (really) that disappears during World War II. Pitt plus kids Dirk Jr. and Summer solve that mystery as well. This series holds up surprisingly well over time. Realism was never its strong suit, nor meant to be -- it's totally escapist -- but Cussler meanwhile brings enough up-to-the-moment technology and razzle-dazzle action to keep it fresh. He seems to have given up worrying about Pitt’s real-time aging; he will apparently get to stay in his 50s indefinitely.

I have been a big fan of Clive Cussler's books. I think I have read almost all of his writings. But recently his story lines have become juvenile and not worthy of his earlier novels. This is especially true of the Dirk Pitt series. The earlier novels had great story lines the latter seem to be written for a very young audience. I do not think Clive Cussler is even taking part in writing the books anymore. There is a big drop off in the quality of the writing. This last book seems to be lets have Dirk get into a problem and have him do something heroic. The plot makes little sense, the characters do not think about what is going on around them. Dirk does not even carry a gun in the earlier stages of the story. No one provides security even though it is obvious the plans are being targeted. The initial plot is lose plans find plans lose plan, etc etc. I am having trouble justifying purchasing anymore of the Pitt series. I gave up on the Fargo's. Everyone of their stories follow the same track. The books are becoming boilerplate and no originality. The only one's I like now are the Oregon series and the Issac Bell series. Thus far those two seem to still show good story lines.

Some of the more recent installments in the long running series have been less than compelling. But 'Poseiden's Arrow' reminded me why I started reading the series so long ago.Dirk and Al are back, along with Rudi Gunn, Loren Smith and Pitt's children - Dirk and Summer. Advanced technology has been developed that will allow submarines to be propelled through the water at previously unheard of speeds. The developer of the technology is killed and whether or not it was an accident is questioned. But Pitt believes it was no accident and pursues the investigation with an NCIS investigator. The US lead in technology is in jeopardy when a foreign power partners with an evil mining engineer to corner the market on rare earth materials. Pitt's investigation brings him in the path of the mining engineer and his ambitious plans. As with most Cussler books you have to suspend reality and enjoy the ride. The bad guys can't shoot straight and Pitt has uncanny ability to sense exactly what needs to be done before the edge of the cliff is breached or the ship sinks. But Cussler makes you enjoy the wild ride and root for the good guys - and Pitt and Giordino are always on the side of right.High recommended for fans of the long running series. Not a place to start if you haven't been introduced to Pitt before.
